When a school bus driver steps into unfamiliar territory, every day is a lesson in patience, safety, and adaptability. Here’s a story about one such day.
As a school bus driver, you learn to expect the unexpected. But nothing quite prepared me for today’s adventure.
I was covering a route I might be assigned to someday — a route full of spirited kids who seemed to transform into gremlins as soon as they stepped onto the bus. It was chaos: yelling, jumping, and even vaulting over their seats like gymnasts at the Olympics.
The regular driver was with me, observing, and he tried a few times to calm them down. “Settle down,” he said firmly, but it was like tossing pebbles into a raging river. I wondered if his friendship with their parents made it tricky to enforce rules.
Adding to the challenge was the bus itself. I’m used to driving a flat-nose transit style, but this was a conventional bus — a whole different feel. It felt like learning to drive all over again, with a symphony of chaos in the background.
By the time the route was over, I was exhausted. It left me reflecting: what’s the balance between being kind and being firm? And how do you manage a group of kids who seem to have boundless energy?
It was a lesson in patience and adaptability. While I’m hoping not to be permanently assigned to this run, I know every day on the job teaches us something new.
