Handling student behavior is a key challenge for school bus drivers. Misbehavior can distract from safe driving, but many drivers have developed effective approaches to manage it.
Building relationships with students can make all the difference. One driver shared, “I try to get my kids to respect each other and the bus they ride on. I let them know I dislike paperwork, but if I have to fill out a report, they’ll be talking to their principal.”
Positive reinforcement is another effective strategy. One driver uses a simple reward system to encourage good behavior, saying, “I give out dum dum suckers once a week. If a child breaks a rule, their name is marked, and they miss out on the treat. This system has significantly improved behavior, as students don’t want to miss out or be singled out.”
Driving a school bus also comes with challenges outside the vehicle.
Other drivers on the road are a common frustration. One driver commented, “Other motorists don’t respect buses. They forget it could be their kids or grandkids on board.”
Route planning and logistics can also create obstacles. A driver shared advice for field trips, saying, “Always check out new destinations ahead of time. It can save you from unnecessary stress and surprises.”
The demanding schedule of a school bus driver, with early mornings and split shifts, is another challenge. One driver shared, “Waking up early is the hardest part for me. The driving itself is easy compared to the schedule.”
Some drivers find creative ways to make the ride enjoyable for students.
One driver explained how they switch things up by reversing the route occasionally, saying, “Kids who usually get off last love being first for a change. It makes them feel special and adds some excitement to their day.”
Another driver offers monthly treat days as a reward system. They said, “Students never know when treat day will be, but if they misbehave, they’re told they’ll miss out. It’s amazing how this motivates them to behave and even encourage others to follow the rules.”
A reliable and safe vehicle is essential for drivers to do their jobs effectively. One driver highlighted the importance of having a well-maintained bus, saying, “The job is tough enough without worrying about mechanical issues. Safety should always come first.”
