A school bus driver shares the real challenges of the job, from keeping kids safe on the road to managing their behavior. This article is a call for parents to help create a safer and more respectful bus ride by supporting drivers and teaching children good manners.
As a school bus driver, my main job is simple: get your child from home to school and back safely. But there’s a lot more to it than just driving. Let me explain what I mean by “safely.”
Safety starts before I even start driving. Every day, I check the bus to make sure it’s working right and hasn’t been messed with. When I’m driving, I have to pay attention to a lot of things — my mirrors, blind spots, the road, and the other cars around us. I can’t afford to be distracted.
I’m not a babysitter, though. I’m a bus driver. I have to focus on the road, and while I want to keep an eye on what’s going on behind me, if I’m not watching the road, something could go wrong. While I’m making sure one kid isn’t standing up, I could miss a car pulling out in front of me. If I’m dealing with a problem in the back of the bus, I might not notice a traffic light change, and that could cause an accident.
It’s not easy. There’s a lot going on, and I can’t catch everything. If I stop every time a kid yells “Bus driver!” or acts out, we’d never make it anywhere. Parents would be upset because the bus would always be late. But if I don’t keep my eyes on the road, that’s when accidents can happen, and I’ll be blamed for not paying attention.
One of the hardest parts is figuring out where to seat the kids. We don’t have much time with each child, and we’re expected to know who gets along with who, who can sit together, and who shouldn’t. Some kids can’t sit together because of problems, others don’t want to sit near certain kids. We try to arrange the seats in the best way possible, but there are always complaints. No matter where we put the kids, someone is unhappy.
Managing a bus with 20+ kids is tough. I need your help as parents. Teach your children to sit down, keep their hands to themselves, and show respect. If they need something to do, send them with a book, a phone, or something quiet to help them stay calm. This makes the ride better for everyone.
If your child is being bullied, teach them how to speak up. Let them know it’s okay to tell the driver if something is happening. We want to help, but we can’t do it if the kids don’t say anything. Sometimes, the kids who are being bullied never tell us, and that makes it harder to fix things.
It’s important to remember that we can’t solve everything. We’ll step in when kids are misbehaving, but we’re also trying to drive safely. Sometimes we have to raise our voices to stop bad behavior, but it’s not about being mean—it’s about making sure everyone stays safe. I don’t want your child to be hurt because I wasn’t paying attention.
So, parents, please help us. Teach your kids to sit down, be quiet, and be respectful. We can’t do it alone. If you see a driver trying to manage a tough situation, understand that we’re doing our best. We want to make sure your child gets to school safely, but we need your help.
Lastly, for the parents who yell at drivers at the bus stop—please stop. By acting out, you’re showing your kids that it’s okay to act however they want without consequences. This only makes things worse. When we close the bus doors and drive away, we’re still dealing with the tension you’ve caused, and the kids are affected by it too.
If you have a problem, please talk to us calmly. We’re happy to discuss things and find solutions, but yelling and arguing won’t help anyone.
