"Personally connecting and changing the lives of a troubled student. I had a student who lived in the country, very low-income home. He was fighting and stealing, and his mother refused to pick him up from football practice, so he walked 15 miles to get home. We bonded over wrestling, and after we connected, he quit fighting and stealing. I saw a bit of my younger self in him, and I knew I had the chance to change his perspective. Two years later, he still asks new drivers if they know me and even invited me to his football and wrestling matches. Lastly, yes—I reported his mother."

"Stopping a child’s tears with a hug, a small toy, or a kind word can turn their whole day around. Sometimes, just knowing someone cares is enough to make a difference."
