Meet Rajesh Uncle, as the kids call him. Every morning at 6 AM, he's already checking his Delhi Public School bus, making sure everything's ready for another day of safely getting 40+ kids to school and back home.
Picture this: it's 7 AM in Delhi, and Rajesh is navigating through auto-rickshaws, cars, and pedestrians while keeping an eye on excited kids in the back. Some are sleepy, others are chattering about yesterday's cricket match, and a few are finishing their homework. This is just another Tuesday for Indian school bus drivers.
"Kids are kids," says Rajesh with a smile. "Some days they're angels, other days... well, you need patience!"
Let's talk money - because everyone's curious but nobody asks. Most school bus drivers in India make anywhere from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month ($180-$300). The lucky ones working for premium international schools in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bangalore might see ₹30,000-40,000 ($360-$480). It's not making anyone rich, but for many, it's steady work with decent respect in the community.
Many drivers work split shifts - morning school run, then maybe they drive a private taxi or delivery truck, then back for the afternoon pickup. It's hustle mode, Indian style.
Traffic is insane: Try driving a big yellow bus through Mumbai traffic while 30 kids are asking "Uncle, are we there yet?" every five minutes. It takes skills you can't learn in driving school.
Parents can be... intense: Some parents track the bus on GPS and call if you're 2 minutes late. Others want you to drop their kid right at their doorstep instead of the designated stop.
The kids: Most are sweet, but managing energy levels from kindergarten to high school in one bus? That's like being a teacher, driver, and referee all at once.
Weather drama: Monsoon season means flooded roads and worried parents. Summer means cranky kids in hot buses - and yes, many Indian schools DO run during summer months! While some have summer breaks in May-June, others shift to early morning timings (7 AM starts anyone?) to beat the heat. Winter fog means extra careful driving.
Summer school reality check: Unlike many Western countries, lots of Indian schools run through summer! Some have air-conditioned buses (the fancy ones), but many drivers are dealing with 40°C heat while managing sweaty, irritable kids. Pro tip from drivers: keep extra water bottles and maybe some glucose biscuits for emergencies.
Festival season: Diwali, Holi, Eid - kids come to school in traditional clothes, excited and hyper. Drivers become unofficial photographers as parents want pics of their kids in ethnic wear by the school bus.
Monsoon adventures: When it rains in India, it REALLY rains. Drivers become weather experts, knowing which roads flood first and having backup routes memorized. Kids love splashing through puddles; drivers... not so much.
But here's the thing - most drivers genuinely love their job. They'll tell you about:
Raman, who drives for a school in Bangalore, puts it best: "These kids, they become like my own. I know who had a fight with their best friend, who's nervous about exams, who forgot their lunch money again."
The GPS and camera thing is new and honestly, drivers have mixed feelings. Good for safety, sure, but it also means being watched all day. Some drivers joke they feel like they're in a reality TV show.
Schools are also getting stricter about background checks and training, which is mostly good news for everyone.
In India, being a school bus driver isn't just a job - it's a responsibility. Parents trust you with their most precious cargo. Kids rely on you to start their day right. Schools count on you to be punctual and safe.
Most drivers take this seriously. They know students' names, their stop preferences, and which kid needs extra help getting on the bus. They're not just drivers - they're Uncle, Bhaiya, or Anna to hundreds of kids.
Is it easy money? Definitely not. The hours are split, the traffic is stressful, and the responsibility is huge. But ask any experienced school bus driver, and they'll tell you about the kid who brings them homemade sweets on Diwali, or the parent who says "thank you for keeping my child safe" every single day.
That's what keeps them going, one school run at a time.
