A retired military nurse shares her experience trying to become a school bus driver after retirement. From confusion over outdated study materials to unexpected test failures, his story highlights the challenges of navigating a complex training system, paying out-of-pocket for everything, and facing setbacks in a process that’s meant to be straightforward.
After retiring as a military nurse, I decided to supplement my retirement income by becoming a school bus driver. It seemed like a perfect fit — something steady, with a routine, and a job that would allow me to continue serving the community. But what I didn’t expect was how frustrating and confusing the whole process would be, especially when it came to the training and testing required to get my school bus driver’s license.
To get started, I passed all the written tests and got my permit. For the next three months, I worked as a monitor/aide on the bus, getting a feel for the daily routine. I was then scheduled for hands-on training — 10 hours in total, broken into 2-hour sessions. That part went fine, but when it came to the actual driving test, that’s where things started to go off the rails.
I was given a study packet to review, covering everything from the pre-ride inspection to airbrakes, under the hood, and under the bus. I studied that packet like my life depended on it — after all, I’m an intelligent person with a Master’s degree, years of military experience, and plenty of common sense. I’m also no stranger to testing; I’ve done it before and I test well. So, when I went for my first road test, I was ready — except when I arrived, I was told the correct information hadn’t been entered into the system by the state, and I would need to reschedule for the next available test, which was a month away.
Okay, no problem. I went home, studied my packet more, and returned for the next test. This time, I got all the way through the pre-trip inspection and airbrakes, but when I got to the road test, I failed on a small mistake with the air brakes. I didn’t know I could ask for a fresh start after realizing my mistake. The study packet didn’t mention that option, nor did my trainer. I thought I was supposed to just power through, and as a result, I ended up failing the test. I had to reschedule again, and once again, the next available slot was another month away.
So, I went home, studied some more, and when the time came, I returned for another attempt. This time, I was scheduled for a different testing site. But when I got there, I was told I had to go back to the original site. At this point, I was already feeling frustrated, but I kept at it. I studied even harder, knowing that I couldn’t afford another failure.
Fast forward to today — I showed up at the testing site again, ready to pass. I got through the inside pre-trip inspection and air brakes, but when I went through the outside inspection, I was told I missed too many points. The instructor then asked me what I’d been studying, and I showed her my packet. She looked at it, then looked at me, and said, “This is six years old. Things have been added and removed since then.”
I was stunned. I had been studying the wrong material the entire time. I wasn’t given the updated study packet, and no one had told me the information had changed. I spent hours and hours studying the wrong things. All my tests, every trip to the DMV, and all the money I spent—none of it was my fault, but now I’m facing another delay, and it feels like I’m stuck in an endless loop.
I know I’m not a beginner when it comes to tests. I’ve spent years in education and the military, and I’ve never had trouble passing exams before. I’m highly capable, and I have common sense, so why is this so difficult? The whole process has been unnecessarily complicated and frustrating.
To make matters worse, I’ve had to pay for everything myself. I’ve covered the costs for every test, every trip to the DMV, and the DOT physical exam. The school district has provided no financial assistance whatsoever. They didn’t even help with the study materials, and now I’m at a crossroads, wondering if this is even worth it anymore.
Is this the norm? Is this how the system works for everyone? I get that things can be complicated, but I’ve followed all the steps, studied my heart out, and still feel like I’m being set up to fail. It’s exhausting, and honestly, I’m about ready to just walk away from the whole thing.
I wanted to help out, serve the community, and drive a school bus, but instead, I feel like I’m being treated like just another number in a broken system. It’s hard to stay motivated when you’re giving it your all, and it feels like no one is invested in helping you succeed. All I want is to pass the test, get behind the wheel, and do my part. But right now, it feels like the system is working against me.
