In this heartfelt interview, we sit down with Maria Hernandez, a dedicated school bus driver who has been safely transporting children to and from school for over 15 years. From her reasons for choosing the job to what she loves most about it, Maria shares the joys and challenges of a career that plays an essential role in shaping young lives.
— Maria, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us today. To start, can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to become a school bus driver?
— Thank you for having me! Well, it wasn’t something I planned as a kid, but life has a funny way of guiding you to where you’re meant to be. I’ve always enjoyed being around children, and I knew I wanted a job that would allow me to contribute to their safety and well-being in some way. I used to work as a part-time cashier, but when my kids were growing up, I wanted a schedule that allowed me to be there for them — especially during school hours. One day, I saw an ad for a school bus driver position and thought, why not give it a try? I took the leap, and I’ve been here ever since!
— That's wonderful! It sounds like the flexibility was a big factor for you. Once you started the job, what did you find most rewarding about it?
— Absolutely. The schedule works well for me, but what really makes it rewarding is the connection I get to have with the kids. I see them every day — some of them from kindergarten all the way to high school—and it’s amazing to watch them grow up. A lot of them come to the bus in the morning grumpy or tired, but by the time they get off in the afternoon, their faces are bright with stories of their day. Even just a small greeting or a kind word from me can make a difference. It’s a role I take to heart because I know I’m part of their daily routine and a small but important part of their school experience.
— That’s really touching. I think a lot of people might not realize the kind of emotional connection school bus drivers like you develop with the kids. What would you say is one of the biggest challenges of the job?
— One of the biggest challenges is managing all the different personalities. You have kids who are just full of energy, and then there are the quieter ones who might be going through things at home. I have to make sure everyone is safe, and that includes keeping things calm when the kids start getting rowdy. Sometimes it’s not just about driving the bus — it’s about being a mediator, a listener, or even a bit of a counselor when needed. I’ve learned to be patient and understanding, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy.
— I can imagine. It’s not just a driving job — it’s a balancing act of responsibility, patience, and care. On the flip side, what do you enjoy most about being a school bus driver?
— There’s so much I love about it! First, I really enjoy the feeling of making a difference. It’s not just about getting kids from point A to point B; it’s about creating a safe and positive environment for them. I also love the simple moments — the smiles, the waves, the kids saying, “Good morning, Mrs. Hernandez!” It may seem small, but it makes a big impact. Plus, I get to see the kids in their natural, unfiltered selves before school starts, and it’s always refreshing. There’s something special about hearing their silly jokes, the little stories they share, or even their random thoughts on life. It keeps me laughing!
— It sounds like you really enjoy those moments. Now, over the years, what’s one thing you’ve learned from the kids that has stayed with you?
—That’s a great question! I think one of the biggest things I’ve learned is how resilient kids are. They go through challenges — whether it’s school struggles, family issues, or just life — and they find ways to keep going. I think as adults, we sometimes forget how tough kids can be. They have this ability to bounce back and face each day with hope. I admire that so much, and it reminds me not to take life too seriously. If they can keep their heads up and push through, so can I.
— That’s such a beautiful perspective, Maria. You’re right — kids have an incredible resilience that we sometimes overlook. To wrap up, what advice would you give someone considering becoming a school bus driver?
— If you love kids and you’re looking for a job that’s meaningful, I’d say go for it. It’s not just about driving a bus — it’s about being there for the kids in small but significant ways. It’s a job that requires patience, understanding, and a lot of heart. If you have that, then you’ll not only do well in the role, but you’ll also make a lasting impact on the kids you serve. And don’t forget to enjoy the little moments — those small gestures of kindness and connection are what make this job so special.
— Maria, thank you so much for sharing your story with us today. It’s clear you truly care about the kids you transport every day, and your passion for your job shines through. We wish you many more years of safe travels and meaningful moments with the kids!
— Thank you! It’s been my pleasure to share, and I appreciate your kind words. It really is an honor to be part of their lives, even in a small way.
