Meet Jim Thompson, a 70-year-old school bus driver who's been driving kids to school for more than 40 years. In this interview, Jim shares his story — why he chose this job, what keeps him going after so many years, and what he loves most about his work. Jim’s wisdom and humor offer a refreshing perspective on a career that’s been as much about people as it has been about driving.
— Jim, thanks for taking the time to talk with us today. You’ve been a school bus driver for a long time — over 40 years, right? How did you first get into this job?
— Yeah, it's been a long road! I started back when I was in my late 20s. I was working odd jobs here and there, and I had a buddy who drove a bus. One day, he said they were looking for drivers, and I thought, "Why not?" I needed something steady, and I liked the idea of being around kids. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d stay this long, but here I am, 70 years old, still behind the wheel.
— That’s amazing! I bet you’ve seen a lot of changes in all these years. What do you like most about being a school bus driver?
— Well, the kids, for one thing. They keep you young, you know? I like chatting with them, hearing about their day, or just making ‘em laugh. Some of ‘em give me a hard time, but that’s part of the fun. And I like the routine too. I get up early, start the bus, and I know what I’m doing every day. It’s simple, but it gives me a sense of purpose. I think, after so many years, it’s kind of in your blood.
— That’s true! You really do become part of their daily lives. Is there a moment or a memory from all your years that really stands out to you?
— Oh, there’s a bunch of them. Some of the funniest ones are the things the kids say. I remember one little girl asked me one day, “Mr. Jim, do you get to drive the bus home when you're done?” I told her, "No, I leave it at the school and walk home." She looked at me all serious and said, "Oh, so you have a special bus you drive at home, right?" I had to hold in the laughter. Then there’s the times the kids sing songs or tell me about their pets or their hobbies. You get to know ‘em like family.
— That’s so sweet! But I’m sure the job also comes with some tough moments, right? What’s been one of the hardest parts of being a bus driver?
— Yeah, it’s not all easy. There’s the weather — snow, rain, all of that. You gotta keep your head on a swivel, especially during bad weather. But the hardest part, for me, is when I see kids go through tough times. Sometimes you can tell something’s wrong, and you wish you could do more for ‘em. I’ve had a few kids who I think needed a little extra care, and it hurts to know you can’t always fix what’s going on in their lives. But you try to show them some kindness, and hopefully that helps a bit.
— That’s really thoughtful, Jim. I think a lot of people probably don’t realize how much of an impact you can have on a child’s day, just by being there for them. So, what keeps you going after all these years? What makes you want to keep driving?
— Well, like I said, it’s the kids. I feel like I’m still able to make a difference. Plus, I enjoy the work. It’s not hard on me physically yet, and I’m lucky enough to be healthy enough to keep at it. I’ve always said, if you don’t enjoy something, you shouldn’t do it. I still look forward to every day. And, I’ve been lucky to have good coworkers too. We all watch out for each other, especially in bad weather or when things get a little hectic. It’s nice knowing you’re part of a team.
— That’s a great attitude. You’ve really built a life around this work. Looking back, is there anything you would tell someone who’s just starting out as a school bus driver?
— I’d say, take it seriously. You’re responsible for those kids, and that’s no small thing. But also, enjoy the little moments. Don’t get too caught up in the stress of the job. There’s always something that’s gonna come up — weather, traffic, whatever — but at the end of the day, you’re doing something important. And if you show up with a smile and a good attitude, you’ll find that most of the kids will respond to that. Be patient, be kind, and don’t take it all too hard.
— That’s some solid advice, Jim. You’ve been doing this for so long, and it’s clear that you’ve found a real passion for it. Do you ever think about retirement, or are you planning to keep driving for a while?
— I’ve thought about it, sure. But right now, I’m still enjoying it. I don’t feel too old for it yet. I guess I’ll keep going until I can’t anymore. As long as I’m still able to drive safely and take care of the kids, I’ll be here. I think when the day comes that I’m not able to do the job right, that’s when I’ll step aside. But for now, I’m happy to keep going.
— Jim, you are truly an inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us today. It’s clear you’ve made a lasting impact on all the kids you’ve driven over the years, and we’re lucky to have you still behind the wheel!
— Aw, thank you. It’s been my pleasure. I’ve had a good run, and if I can keep helping out for a few more years, I’m happy with that. It’s not just a job for me — it’s part of who I am.
