— Can you tell us about your journey as a school bus driver?
— I started driving a school bus six years ago. Before that, I was working full-time in another field, but family issues made it difficult for me to continue with a full-time job. I needed something more flexible, so I decided to become a part-time school bus driver. I usually drive the morning shift, and occasionally, I take the afternoon routes if needed.
— What do you enjoy most about being a school bus driver?
— I love this job. The kids are wonderful, and I enjoy seeing them every day. It feels good to know I’m helping them get to school safely. It’s not just a job; it’s a responsibility, and I take it seriously. I love the routine, and there’s something peaceful about the quiet mornings, just me and the kids.
— How do you manage to balance your family life with work?
— It hasn’t been easy, especially with family commitments. But driving only the morning shift makes it more manageable for me. I also appreciate that the school bus company is flexible and understands my needs. I sometimes take on afternoon shifts if it’s required, but I try to keep a good balance. It’s all about planning and making sure I take care of both my family and my responsibilities as a driver.
— What are the biggest challenges you face on the job?
— Some days can be difficult, especially when dealing with traffic or managing kids who are a bit rowdy. But the hardest part for me is the physical toll. Driving for long hours can be tough on the body, but I manage. It’s all part of the job.
— What advice would you give to someone who is considering a job as a school bus driver?
— It’s a rewarding job, but you need patience, good driving skills, and the ability to handle various situations, both on the road and with the kids. It’s not always easy, but if you love working with kids and you have the flexibility, it can be very fulfilling. And, of course, safety is always the top priority.
— Finally, what keeps you coming back to work every day?
— It’s the kids, really. I feel like I’m making a difference in their day, and that makes it all worth it. There’s a sense of pride in knowing that I help them start their day on a positive note. Even after all these years, I still get a sense of satisfaction from the work I do. It’s more than just a job to me; it’s something I enjoy, and I feel lucky to be able to continue doing it.
