Interview with a new school van driver (no CDL)

— Why did you decide to work as a school van driver, and what do you enjoy about the job so far?

— I’ve always liked being around kids, and I wanted a job where I could help them get to school safely. I enjoy the regular schedule and know I’m helping the kids daily. It’s nice to have a quiet time in the van during the drive, and I’m getting used to the responsibility of keeping them safe.

— How do you make sure the kids are safe when driving them in the van?

— Before each trip, I check the van to make sure everything is working right, like the tires and lights. I make sure the kids are all sitting properly and wearing their seatbelts. I drive slowly when I’m in a school zone and stop when kids are getting in or out. I always check my mirrors to make sure no one is left behind.

— What steps do you take to keep the kids safe when they’re getting in and out of the van?

— When I pick up or drop off kids, I stop far from the curb to make sure they’re safe when getting out. I never leave the van running when kids are getting in or out. If they have to cross the street, I make sure they’re safely on the other side before I drive away. I remind them to stay seated while the van is moving.

— How do you make sure the kids are behaving safely during the ride?

— I set rules for the kids before every trip. I tell them to stay in their seats, not to yell, and not to distract me. If one of them is being disruptive, I calmly remind them of the rules. If they keep acting out, I’ll talk to their parents about it. I also keep an eye on them using my rearview mirror while driving.

— How do you check the van to make sure it’s ready for every trip?

— Before I start driving, I check the van quickly. I make sure the tires are okay, the lights are working, and there’s enough gas. I also make sure the kids’ seats are secure and there’s nothing in the van that could be a danger. If something is wrong, I report it so it can be fixed.

— What would you do if another car doesn’t stop when you’re picking up or dropping off kids?

— If another car doesn’t stop when I’m picking up or dropping off kids, I make sure all the kids are safe on the sidewalk or in the van. I might call the police if the car doesn’t stop. I always turn on my flashing lights to show other drivers to stop, and I remind the kids to stay away from the road until I’m sure it’s safe.

— How would you feel about getting a CDL to drive a bigger school bus in the future?

— I’m open to getting a CDL. I know it’s important for safety, and it would allow me to drive a bigger bus if needed. I plan to look into getting one once I’m ready. I think it will help me get more experience and do an even better job.

— How do you handle issues with parents or school staff about transportation or schedules?

— If parents or school staff have a concern, I always listen carefully. I make sure I understand the problem and try to help fix it. If there’s something I can do, I will. If I need help, I talk to the school or the parents to make sure everything is clear. I always try to keep good communication with everyone.
