School districts across Central Indiana are having trouble finding enough school bus drivers.
Westfield Washington Schools currently has nine bus routes without assigned drivers. The district says it needs about 20 additional drivers, including substitutes who can work when regular drivers are unavailable.
Office and garage employees with commercial driver’s licenses are helping cover routes. Some drivers must complete one route and then return for another group of students. This can cause delays in the morning and afternoon.
The district says Westfield’s growing population has increased the number of buses and employees it needs. Other districts in Marion, Hamilton and Hendricks counties are facing similar problems.
Noblesville Schools also has driver openings. About 6% of its routes are experiencing delays because some drivers must cover additional routes.
Noblesville Schools will hold a bus driver recruitment event on Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the district’s transportation center.
