The Jefferson Parish School District in Louisiana could soon welcome 25 new electric school buses to its fleet, with the School Board scheduled to vote on funding this week.
The district has already been awarded $7.1 million through the federal Clean School Bus Program, which supports replacing older diesel buses with zero-emission models. To access the grant, the district must contribute about 30% in matching funds — roughly $3.4 million — which some leaders propose covering from existing bus maintenance accounts.
Supporters of the plan say the investment will save an estimated $2.3 million annually in fuel and maintenance costs, while also reducing emissions and improving air quality for students and neighborhoods. The initiative also includes installation of 25 charging stations to support the new vehicles.
If approved, the rollout would take place over two years, positioning Jefferson Parish as a leader in Louisiana’s transition to clean student transportation. Officials note the move could serve as a blueprint for other districts looking to modernize their fleets.
