Lawmakers in Minnesota, USA have passed a new bipartisan bill to improve safety around school buses. The Minnesota Senate voted unanimously to clarify when drivers must stop for a school bus with flashing lights.
The new law closes a gap that had caused confusion after a court ruling suggested drivers only had to stop if a bus’s stop arm was fully extended. Under the updated rule, drivers must stop whenever a school bus has flashing red lights, even if the stop arm is not fully out.
Supporters say the change will make the rules clearer for drivers and help protect students getting on and off buses. The bill now moves to the Minnesota House for further consideration.
