In celebration of National Drive Electric Month, New Jersey is reaffirming its commitment to clean, safe, and innovative student transportation with a landmark $20 million investment in electric school bus technology and charging infrastructure. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to support the transportation professionals who ensure students travel safely every day.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has launched two new grant programs that go beyond financial support — they reflect a deep appreciation for the essential role school transportation professionals play.
“These electric buses are long-term investments in the health and safety of New Jersey’s children,” said Governor Phil Murphy, highlighting the vital contribution of school transportation teams to student well-being.
Up to $350,000 per electric bus and charging station for teams serving overburdened districts
Up to $320,000 for other eligible applicants
Open to both public school districts and private contractors
Includes free technical support through the New Jersey Fleet Advisor program
Offers personalized fleet electrification roadmaps and on-site assessments
Up to $100,000 per publicly accessible fast charging port
Prioritizes multi-unit housing and transit station locations
Can be combined with utility incentives to maximize value
New Jersey is already a national leader in electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure development:
Over $55 million invested in 169 electric school buses
Nearly 250,000 electric vehicles on the road
(14% of all new vehicle registrations)
More than 1,700 fast charging ports, with 540 added annually
Over 3,300 Level 2 charging ports, expanding by 682 each year
More than $500 million invested in clean transportation initiatives
