Minnesota school districts can now access a comprehensive $13 million state program, designed to accelerate electric school bus adoption across the state, according to the Minnesota Department of Commerce.
The Electric School Bus Grant Program targets independent and special school districts, tribal contract schools, and transportation providers, offering both technical assistance and future funding for buses and charging infrastructure.
Currently, the program is providing $200,000 in technical assistance grants to help districts launch electric bus initiatives, develop implementation plans, and coordinate with stakeholders. Districts can also receive support applying for federal funding opportunities.
"The program is designed not just to electrify transportation, but to use electric buses as educational tools," according to program materials.
A second funding round, specifically for purchasing buses and chargers, will be announced later in 2024, with the overall program running through December 31, 2026.
To streamline applications, the Department of Commerce created a prioritization metrics spreadsheet to help districts navigate the process more effectively.
