The San Francisco Unified School District is preparing to roll out a major new electric school bus fleet through a partnership with transportation provider Zūm. The first phase of the project will place 104 electric school buses into service beginning in August 2026, with plans to expand to 238 electric buses by the 2027-28 school year.
District leaders said the new buses will provide quieter, zero-emission transportation for students while helping improve air quality across the community. The project also includes advanced charging infrastructure designed to support reliable daily operations.
Officials say the fleet will use vehicle-to-grid technology, allowing buses to return stored energy to the electrical grid when not transporting students. The initiative is expected to support both cleaner student transportation and broader energy sustainability efforts in San Francisco.
