New Mexico is piloting a two-year electric school bus program aimed at modernizing student transportation and reducing emissions. The initiative, led by the New Mexico Economic Development Department, will place new buses in Las Vegas Public Schools and at a Santa Fe charter school.
Funded with $5 million in state capital outlay, the program will cover both the purchase of the buses and project costs. The models, designed for student accessibility, represent the state’s first steps in a broader effort to bring clean, zero-emission transportation to school districts.
Officials hope the program will demonstrate the financial and health benefits of electric buses, with lessons learned helping guide future fleet expansions across the state.
